R134a & R1234yf - Old and New types of Air Con Gas

he first Air Conditioning gas in the automotive industry was R134a, which was used for 20 years until 2013. However, R134a is 1430 times more destructive to the atmosphere than CO2. As society moves away from climate-damaging products, R134a had to be replaced by a greener option.

Laws were created in 2011 which required all new cars & vans in the EU to use an Air Con Gas which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 150. R134a has a GWP of 1430. R1234y (or HFO-1234yf) was introduced as a greener alternative and used in modern cars today.

At A1 Alignment we have trained specialists to carry out Air Con regas on all cars using the newer or older Air Con Gas. Book your appointment today below:

How does the Air Con regas work?

Our trained technicians at A1 alignment will carry out a Six step procedure to conduct your Air Con Recharge & service. These steps are as follows:

  1. System control and temperature checks
  2. Removal of old Gas, Oil and Dye
  3. System deep clean and removal of moisture
  4. Vacuum the System and leak test
  5. Replacement with new Oil, Dye and Refrigerant gas
  6. Recharge system and test

Following this process, your Air Conditioning system will be working to its full potential

Leak Detection

Unlike competitors, at A1 Alignments we always carry out an Air Con leak test before we carry out an Air Con regas. An Air Conditioning leak greatly affects your A/C performance but also has huge impacts on the environment as Gas is leaked into the atmosphere.

If a leak is detected, we will diagnose the problem and contact you to advise on the repair. We conduct 3 tests to ensure your A/C system is safe:

  1. Vacuum Test
  2. UV dye leak detection
  3. Pressure test

Drop your car off today to ensure your Air Conditioning system is safe.

Why does my Air Conditioning smell?

A new smell coming from your vehicle is a strong sign it needs to be serviced. The table below highlights some of the common smells from an Air Conditioning system:

Damp Smell

Smell of Gas

The unique smell of mildew is usually accredited to older cars where mold and bacteria have built upon the air vents.

When the A/C system is first started, a smell of gas may be present. This indicates Gas is building up in the system and needs a service immediately

Chemical, Sweet Smell

Pungent Odours

A sweet, chemical smell is usually accredited to a leak within the system. Usual spots are the hose, pipe, heater core, radiator, or the housing unit for the coolant

When bacteria, dirt, or stagnant water build up on an A/C system, it can produce a vile smell. Resulting in some owners to stop using their A/C

If you observe any of these smells or would like A1 Alignment to check, please book an appointment below:

My Air Con is blowing Hot air?

On those hot summer days, a faulty Air Conditioning unit can be extremely hot and frustrating. Regularly servicing your car’s A/C system will reduce the likelihood of one of these problems occurring.

The most common reasons for failing A/C:

  • Blocked or broken Condenser
  • Internal obstruction in the system
  • An electrical fault
  • Low refrigerant levels
  • Damaged cooling fans

At A1 Alignments, our trained technicians are on call to diagnose and repair your A/C system. Enabling you to get a break from the heat when in your car and enjoy your day.
