ADAS Calibration Services

What is Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)?

ADAS stands for “Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems” and if you have bought a car in the last 10 years, then your car most definitely features ADAS. ADAS systems use automated technologies such as sensors and cameras to detect obstacles and driving errors in the vicinity and react accordingly. Technological innovations and the explosion of automation initiatives are increasing the popularity of these safety systems in vehicles

Whereas in the past we listened to the clatter or grind, or judged whether the steering or suspension were off, ADAS is not so easy to detect when there is a serious malfunction. These complex systems need to be calibrated by trained specialists using advanced equipment.

When do I need ADAS calibration?

ADAS systems are carefully calibrated when the cars leave the factory. However these systems may become mis-aligned and lose their sensitive calibration. Leading to significant impact on the functionality of an ADAS feature, which could be the difference between avoiding an accident or not.

To ensure your ADAS technology is working safely, we highly advise users to get an ADAS calibration after any of the following:

Additionally it is recommended to have your ADAS calibrated every 3 years. Over time, all systems will lose their precision. Hence ADAS calibration is always advised.

If you have any of these repairs carried out or need an ADAS service, please Contact one of our specialists at A1 Alignment. Using state of the art equipment and trained technicians we can calibrate your ADAS systems and ensure it is safe on the roads.

Is it Dangerous if ADAS is not calibrated?

Improper calibration and alignment of ADAS sensors/camera can lead to a number of serious problems. From basic annoyance of incorrect automatic braking to failing to detect a car in your blind spot.

What would have happened if the front camera had been misaligned by 1 degree? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted a study in which they miscalibrated a front camera. The camera was 0.6 degrees to the right, a tiny fraction too far, and the car misrecognized a line on the road two feet to the side. As a result, the vehicles’ brakes failed, and when the IIHS tested them again, the car crashed into an obstacle at 32 km / h, despite a speed of 40 km / h.

Car manufacturers go to great lengths to remind drivers that their driver assistance systems are no substitute for competent driving. We have already mentioned that the purpose of ADAS is not to replace the driver’s eyes, but to broaden, supplement and support them. ADAS systems cannot replace human eyes and driver vigilance.

The ADAS system must be calibrated with the right equipment and specialists trained to operate it. At the same time, not all garages are equipped to calibrate ADAS systems, so it is important that your vehicle is checked, repaired and calibrated by an authorised garages. We at A1 Alignment are authorised, trained and equipped to carry out car repairs and ADAS calibrations.
